Recycling & Materials Management

Why RMM is important ?

The City of Atlanta has adequate infrastructure for recycling; however a lack of access and education leads to dismal participation rates. The purpose of RMM is to encourage the City of Atlanta to develop guidelines and programming for recycling by supporting legislation that leverages resources and partnerships to drive market development and material recovery.

Mission

Established in September 2008, RMM works to increase the amount of commercially viable and recoverable resources going to the most beneficial end markets, while encouraging development of new venues.

Milestones

September-December 2008

RMM Work Group established the mission for the RMM Taskforce by developing policy recommendations focused on resource recovery and the development of new markets for recycling in the City of Atlanta.

January-April 2009

RMM Work Group revised policy recommendations and provided potential action steps necessary for the implementation of policy.

May-July 2009

RMM Stakeholder Group vetted the work of the RMM Work Group and provided input as to the pros/cons, resources, economics, partnerships, public education and community engagement needed for policy implementation.

July-August 2009

Sustainable Atlanta organized all of the input provided by the RMM Work and Stakeholder Groups while listing recommendations for next steps.

Next Steps

  • RMM Stakeholders will assist in the prioritization of policy recommendations to ensure a positive and effective impact.
  • Sustainable Atlanta will compile a report to capture the process of the RMM taskforce in developing ten policy recommendations.
  • Sustainable Atlanta will reconvene the RMM work group to agree on finalized version of the policy recommendations and timeline for implementation to be submitted to Atlanta city council.
